Moab Business Alliance Initiative

Save Energy for Moab Businesses

Vision

Build on the “The Nation's First Green Power Community” by making Moab “The Nation's First Energy Efficient, Green Power Community”

Goal

Work with Utah Clean Energy and Utah Power to provide energy audits and retrofit (20 or 30) Moab businesses. Utah Power provides energy efficiency incentives of up to 50% of the cost of the improvement.

How This Initiative Fits the Mission

This initiative excels at providing sustainable actions for the business community. There is a good learning component and it provides the healthy, collaborative leadership the Business Alliance promotes.

Discussion

Utah Clean Energy (UCE) has been instrumental in creating awareness and participation in Utah Power’s energy efficiency programs – particularly in the successful Moab “First in the Nation” wind power project. The national publicity has been overwhelmingly positive. This presents an image to the world that people here care about the environment and the spectacular country surrounding Moab. As a further commitment, the July of 2005, the Moab City Council passed the following:

“A resolution declaring Moab’s interest in taking a leadership role in promotion of sustainable energy by promoting both energy efficiency and renewable energy for Moab municipal and the community”.

As a result of the “First in the Nation” success, Moab Mayor Dave Sakrison and several Moab business owners have expressed interest to UCE in furthering the community’s activities in responsible energy usage. UCE is proposing a Moab business initiative that would focus on improving efficiency of local business’ usage of energy and other natural resources.

This will be accomplished by working with a wide range of Moab businesses to save energy through PacifiCorp Utah’s FinAnswer Express program. FinAnswer includes incentives and technical expertise for lighting, motors and HVAC equipment upgrades. This applies to both retrofitting existing equipment and new construction.

The tourism businesses in Moab are a key audience. Tourism constitutes a large percentage of energy use and opportunity in Moab
