Go Compact
Switch from incandescent to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) where lights burn at least 3 hours a day. While CFL lamps have a higher initial cost, they use far less energy than standard incandescents and require less maintenance - one CFL lasts more than 10 times as long as a standard incandescent bulb. In addition, replacing a single 75-watt incandescent with a 20 watt CFL reduces the output of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) by an average of 850 pounds over the life of the lamp!

(1)Find lamps that fit all your fixtures; (2) Be sure not to replace incandescent lamp with a CFL that produces less light. Check the "lumens" rating to make sure the output is comparable.
The Best System
In new construction and major remodeling, use electronic ballasts and matched T-8 lamps in your fluorescent lighting. These lamps don't flicker and provide higher quality lighting -- studies have shown increased employee productivity. These lamps will also help save the planet by cutting back on greenhouse gas emissions. Energy savings will pay back the higher installation costs. While you’re at it, include switches for lights located near windows so you can turn them off when not needed during the day.
Electronic Ballast and T-8 lamps work as a matched system. Make sure they work together. Also, dispose of the old tubes correctly. In large quantity, they may need special handling.
Motion Sensors and Timers
Use motion sensors and lighting timers for offices, warehouses, and low use areas such as rest rooms.
(1) Placement is key! Poor quality or poorly placed sensors may leave people in the dark; (2) Many problems can be avoided by getting user feedback in advance. Involve users in the process of changing the lighting set up.
Plug into Daylighting
Don't lose this one time opportunity in your new building. Make daylighting part of the new design. Daylighting combined with proper controls and efficient electric lighting makes for a pleasant, productive work or recreation space.
Poorly designed daylighting can cause glare and require a high level of electric light as a balance. Daylighting needs to be designed for all seasons. Bring an experienced daylighting designer on your design team for best results.
