Greening and Sustainability - Habitat Charrette Salt Lake
Sustainable House To Be Built For A Habitat For Humanity Family
About the Workshop

The Design for Life Workshop this year will focus on the design of an affordable, sustainable, and energy efficient house for a Habitat for Humanity family. The sponsors are working together to develop a design that will be built by workshop participants and other volunteers.

This workshop will be similar to last years' Design for Life workshop in the use of multi-disciplined design teams, but it is unique in encouraging the dynamic tension between all out environmental designs and the practical requirements of the site, budget and program.

The keynote speaker for the workshop will be John Knott, CEO and Managing Partner of Dewees Island, South Carolina, a sustainable community dedicated to environmental preservation. John works with Habitat International and is a strong advocate of the process and goals of the organization.

Who Should Attend?

The design ideas generated in this workshop will be valuable to anyone interested in practical, sustainable housing. At the same time it will provide an opportunity to carry out our goal of developing a home for a Habitat family based on sustainable and environmentally sensitive principles.

  • Anyone interested in affordable, sustainable, energy efficient housing
  • Architects
  • Builders
  • Building code, zoning and regulating authorities
  • Building material suppliers
  • Engineers
  • Financial community
  • Goshen Street neighbors
  • Habitat clients
  • Housing authorities
  • Landscape professionals

Design Teams and Strategy

"Beyond the Boundaries" Design Teams
The majority of the workshop will be spent in 4 to 5 multi-disciplinary design teams. The first half-day will be spent developing "Beyond the Boundaries" designs. We will be investigating alternative ideas such as small, well designed, highly energy efficient homes, innovative groupings of homes, or super insulated homes heated only by a water heater. Teams will look for non-incremental improvements, creative conceptual ideas and work toward cascading, breakthrough thinking. Each of the teams will report back to the entire group to share concepts, design ideas and to stimulate creative thinking.

"Low Cost No Cost" Design Teams
Saturday morning, new teams will be formed to create sustainable, but practical no cost/low cost designs which will meet neighborhood expectations, codes, zoning and Habitat requirements. "Beyond the Boundaries" ideas will be developed into buildable designs.

Design Teams and Resource Experts
Each design team will be co-facilitated by a design leader and a professional facilitator. The design team leaders will help guide and stimulate the design process and the facilitators will quickly build teams, keep us on time and help document results.

Resource people with particular expertise will act as "consultants" to each of the teams. The design teams will be changed the second day to give everyone an opportunity to meet and work with different people.

Design Guidelines
In addition to the Habitat design guidelines, the "GreenHOME" guidelines that were developed by the Washington, DC affiliate of Habitat for Humanity will be used in the design development. The areas covered are:

  • Waste reduction
  • Reuse
  • Recycling
  • Recycled materials
  • Composting
  • Nontoxic material and product use
  • Energy efficiency
  • Landscaping
